In 11 levels, Odysseus gains Intelligence to Reflex saves, crit confirmation, damage Vs flat-footed and flanked, and rolls to oppose an enemy’s bull rush, trip, etc. The White Raven discipline is fitting for a leader, while Diamond Mind is all about presence of mind. As an intelligence-based class, this seems like the best choice, and he can select maneuvers that fit the setting (not too flashy or supernatural). He needs all the help he can get with his Fortitude saves.Īnd finally, the warrior side is Warblade all the way. In 4 levels, he’ll get Skill Artistry and Mastery, a skill-related bonus feat, and Sustaining Presence for adding Charisma to Fortitude saves. The flavour of the class fits his scoundrel side.Īs soon as he qualifies, he gets into Exemplar, the skillmonkiest PrC. This dip gives Tongue of the Devil, which adds Intelligence to bluff checks, and again seems tailored to Odysseus. Then 1 level of Marshal, which fits nicely both fluff (he leads men into battle) and crunch (he gets skill focus in diplomacy, and a Minor Aura – Motivate Intelligence will do). Instead of Flurry of Blows, he gets the Decisive Strike ACF, for a single attack that deals double damage and seems more appropriate. We politely ignore the incompatible flavour, and we’re left with good wrestler material: unarmed strike, Improved Unarmed Strike, and Improved Grapple. It gives tons of skill points, which he should definitely have, plus all skills as class skills, and Brains over Brawn (Intelligence to Strength- and Dexterity-based checks and skills), which seems tailored for him. So first he gets 3 levels of Factotum, which shows the diversity of his abilities. The skillmonkey side will be represented by an assortments of dips, and the warrior side with Warblade. Odysseus is half-skillmonkey and half-warrior. STATS AT LEVEL 21: Str 14, Dex 12, Con 14, Int 22, Wis 8, Cha 16 STARTING STATS: Str 14, Dex 12, Con 14, Int 18, Wis 8, Cha 15 (His encounter with the Sirens shows, if anything, how a man can make up for his profound lack of wisdom with an excess of cleverness.) His Dexterity is not impaired, but nothing exceptional.Īnd his Wisdom, I’m afraid, is rather lacking. He has a good Constitution, otherwise he couldn’t have endured the 10-year journey on the rough seas, right after 10 years of war. When Odysseus beats Ajax in wrestling (and wins the arms of the fallen Achilles), it’s not because he’s stronger – it’s because he doesn’t rely on brute force exclusively, otherwise he would hit the dirt on round one. But he’s not phenomenal, like Ajax, who is indeed strong as an ox. His Strength makes an impression, as the bow incident shows (the bow none of the suitors can even bend, but he can shoot accurately). And of course, he’s a king, a leader, a commander. He lies, he cheats, he can bluff his way out of anything. He’s the man who evaluates a situation, thinks of a solution, makes a plan and fights against all odds with his wit. He’s the man of many crafts, an engineer, a sailor, a MacGuyver of the Iron Age. His highest attribute is definitely Intelligence. Odysseus is the quintessential Cunning Hero. Fractional BAB and saves, 1 flaw, 2 traits, no XP penalties for multiclassing, no alignment, otherwise RAW.(Odysseus won the arms of Achilles, forged by Hephaestus, although by the time he returned home, he’d lost them.) No magic items available, other than those made by the gods.Level 21 and point buy 40, as befits a literally Epic character.
